What is an Ambulatory Surgery Center?

An ambulatory surgery center, or ASC, is a facility designed for procedures that do not require an overnight hospital stay. It is separate from a hospital outpatient department and focuses on a narrower range of same-day operations. An ASC is not the appropriate setting for every patient or every procedure, but it can be a good fit when the operation and the patient's health allow it.

Why Should I Care About Surgery Centers?

The same planned operation can carry very different facility charges depending on where it is performed. In our practice experience, we commonly see families paying less than half—and sometimes close to one-third—of the hospital outpatient cost when an ambulatory surgery center is an appropriate alternative.

That is an observation from estimates and family experiences we have encountered, not a guarantee or a published national average. Your out-of-pocket cost depends on the procedure, facility, insurance contract, network, deductible and benefits.

Are Hospitals Able to Provide ENT Care?

Yes. A hospital may be the better setting when a patient needs additional monitoring, specialized resources, an overnight stay or care for significant medical conditions. Cost should never override the setting needed for safe care. When either location is clinically appropriate, understanding the differences lets a patient make a more informed choice.

Being Smart About ENT Care in Fort Worth

Before scheduling, ask for an estimate that separates the expected surgeon, anesthesia and facility charges. Ask whether the facility and each professional are in network. These questions matter because a single global estimate may not reveal every component of the final cost.

Dr. Fewins selects the surgical setting around the procedure, age, health history, anesthesia needs and recovery plan. When an ASC and a hospital are both reasonable options, facility cost becomes an appropriate part of the discussion.

Your Choice Matters Because You Are Unique

You can ask which settings are available for your operation and why one is being recommended. You may also request care with Dr. Fewins even when an initial referral points elsewhere. Referral, authorization and network requirements depend on your insurance plan, and our team can help you identify what to verify.

Adult safety research

These studies address selected adult populations, including adults with sleep apnea undergoing non-upper-airway surgery and older patients with or without multimorbidity. They do not establish pediatric outcomes or ENT-specific cost savings.
